What Recession? part 1

OMGTEHECONOMEEEE!

My family has been affected by The Recession - I won't go into detail - but I figured on this blog of mine, I'd highlight some extravagance to counterbalance the weight of the world.

There's been much made of being ON A BOAT recently, but you've never been on this boat... because it's a wooden car-shaped boat.

Check it out:

I read Thomas Mann's Death In Venice a few months ago and I'm sure Gus von A could have gotten Tadzio's attention cruising around the city in one of these.

/sorry. GROSS!

Megan Fox apologizes for THE PICTURE

did you, like i, see last week's PICTURE of a poor little boy offering a single rose to Megan Fox??? If not, take a gander at this:

awwwww, we've all been that kid - offering our unnoticed rose to the object of our unrequited affection... or something... if you, like i, were quick to condemn Megan Fox for what *appeared to be* her unfeeling dismissal of an adoring fan, take a look at THIS:

Such is the life of a young starlet.

And this from videogum.com (my favorite site ever of all time in history) and a visionary commenter who goes by the name of MusclesMarinara:

How's that feel, Fox? Now that the proverbial shoe is on the other proverbial foot? Take that comeuppance and stick it in your back pocket.... hmmmph.

1st look @ tim burton's Alice in Wonderland

if you read this blog, you already know I have a bit of an Alice and Wonderland... thing.

So I flipped out when I saw these pics:

Wishing everyone a Very Merry Unbirthday!

Girl makes prom dress of coffee filters

From TheFashionPolice.net via Jezebel:

Aimee Kick from Missouri, US, spent a month creating this dress, which is made completely from coffee filters, for her senior prom at Francis Howell North High School. The 18-year-old aspiring fashion designer spends a lot of time at coffee shops and has become known locally as the "the girl with a coffee cup". Although presumably now she'll be known as "the girl in the coffee dress".

LOVE IT!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

aTYPICAL is Kind of a BIG Deal

Cincinnati, OH–June 17, 2009– On Saturday June 20, aTYPICALsOLE will kick off their summer series by releasing their Kind of a Big Deal T-shirt at Corporate Sneaker Boutique.

The shirt–designed with a picture of the legendary Notorious BIG–was conceptualized by Nudy, Dubs and MattFoo.

“Dubs threw it out there to make a shirt while we were listening to the Clipse and Kanye record, Nudy said. MattFoo started on the designs, but the slogan alone wasn’t doing it justice. One night while I was watching Notorious, it hit me like lightning. The next day we had a shirt.”

Corporate owner Matt Tomamichel is anticipating the release of the T-shirt at his shop on Saturday, which will be featured among some of the most prominent streetwear lines, such as 10 Deep, Stussy and NSW.

“aTYPICAL is a line I’d seen around for sometime, Matt said. Working with Nudy recently has made me a believer in the aTyp line. He showed us a lot of love in getting the shirt in here.”

Nudy and the rest of the aTYPICAL crew are proud of their new design and the recognition it is getting.

Nudy said this is one of the best feelings in the world. “Now I can’t wait to get in more shops around the world, Nudy said. Hopefully this release will help everyone take notice of what we got going on here in the ‘Nati!”

Because of the large response for the T-shirt, the shirts will also be featured in other shops after Saturday’s release.

Big Deal T-shirts can be purchased at Corporate Sneaker Boutique, which is located at 11578 Springfield Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45246. They can also be ordered online at www.atypicalshop.com.

Mini Ryan Gosling, JC Chasez, Justin Timberlake singing R&B

2 Justin Timberlake posts in a row. The end times are nigh!

Anywho, I saw this video @ Jezebel and it was too good not to post. I've posted about Ryan Gosling's band, Dead Man's Bones, here before - but that's nothing compared to the videos below:

Anyone else spot mini-Britney Spears getting PISSED that Justin hugged some other girl and then snatching him away?

These dance moves are sooooo awkward. Ahhhh the 90s!

I'm waiting for Ryan Gosling's R&B album to drop.

Iran post election: Mousavi vs. Ahmadinejad

UPDATE: Young people in Iran are rejecting Ahmadinejad's victory, don't see his win as legitimate & are challenging in favor of moderate/reformist candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi!! It's truly inspiring to see. I just watched Christiane Amanpour's report of young people in green (Mousavi's campaign color) pooooouuuuurrrriiiiiing into the streets of Iran shouting "End Dictatorship" and "Democracy Now". The tide of change may be crashing on shores of young minds in Iran. If Mousavi does (somehow) win the presidency in Iran, that could mean a new beginning of Iran's relationship with America and the rest of the world, and a better life for its people.

Photos from The Big Picture:

Update: Hilary Clinton is giving a press conference in which she and the Canadian equivalent of the Secretary of State are expressing concern and stating that they have intelligence to suggest that there may have been voting irregularities, voter intimidation, and the possibility of election fraud - and that Ahmadinejad's victory was won illegitimately http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/06/13/iran.election.reax/index.html

Update:
from twitter: facebook, myspace, social networking and opposition sites have been blocked, cell phone use is down - iranian people are getting the message out via twitter.

this is crazy.

This from before the results were announced. Young people in Iran want change:

These pictures from the outrage after the election results:

This is inspiring and frightening all at once. I'll continue to post updates. The world is watching Iran right now.

Update: International journalists are being asked by the government, at peril of intervention by security forces, to leave Iran!

Update: This blog from a young man in Tehran with real-time pictures and video. Updated constantly: http://shooresh1917.blogspot.com/2009/06/blog-post_13.html

Update: Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has just released a statement about the election in Iran and possible irregularities - and about his being impressed with the vigorous debate and enthusiasm amongst young Iranians.

Update: Ahmadinejad is delivering a press conference right now talking about "what the people demand", equating that with his being elected. Watch on Cnn.com Live. Quotes from Ahmadinejad: Election "was a look toward the future and high aspirations" ... "This was a free election." ... "The government belongs to the core of the people." ... "The elections in Iran are really important... totally popular based." <-- Ahmadinejad has, in essence, taken over national airwaves and shut down comminication within Iran and its peoples' ability to send information out of the country.

Update: Trita Parsi, President of the National Iran-American Council on CNN says his peers are in "disbelief" because this election outcome "is not possible".

Update: My heart is breaking! Mousavi has been arrested! (edit: this seems to not have been confirmed. Waiting for more credible news source).
edit#2 - 2nd news source - the trouble is that the initial story is in Farsi...

Update:
Videos from the streets of Tehran:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdO9o5xpmog <-- From the BBC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz5BzKuoT40 <-- From Reuters

People in the streets of Tehran chanting "Mousavi, Mousavi!"

Update: NYTime article w/ quotes from Iranian voters:

“Another four years of dictatorship,” a voter muttered, and “this is a coup d’état.” Several others agreed. Some women wept openly. Some talked of “mutiny.” Others were more cynical.

“It was just a movie,” said Hussein Gharibi, a 54-year-old juice vendor, scoffing at those who got their hopes up. “They were all just players in a movie.”...

“They didn’t rig the vote,” claimed this man, who showed his ministry identification card but pleaded not to be named. “They didn’t even look at the vote. They just wrote the name and put the number in front of it.”

“By the evening people will pour into the streets,” predicted one young woman, from inside the hood of her black chador. “But Ahmadinejad will become president by force.”

Update: Updates from Twitter:
  • RT @brianstelter RT @jimsciuttoABC: #iran police confiscated our camera and videotapes. We are shooting police violence on our cell phones
  • KateHeflin: Twitter is the only social network open in Iran right now-so read the tweets coming over
  • voteforiran: Demonstration in front of Iranian embassy in The Hague Sunday at noon
  • mohamadreza: 5000 people at Tajrish Sq. Tehran
Update: Another live-blog from inside Iran. Very harrowing. Video, raw footage + accounts of cellphones, texting, television, and internet being disabled and censored. http://tehranbureau.com/2009/06/13/alerts-from-tehran/

Update: Mousavi has written to the Ayotolla, gone over Ahmadinejad's head, to find a way to appeal, says Prof. Fawaz Gerges, Middle Eastern Studies of Sarah Lawrence.

Update: Live-blog from Iranian-American news blog http://niacblog.wordpress.com/

Google vs. Bing

Inspired by this post @ bestweekever.tv (my former favorite comedy site - now it's videogum.com), I've decided to Google myself and compare the results to Binging myself (Microsoft describes Bing not as a Google replacement, but as a "decision" rather than a "search" engine).

The Results of a search for REBECCA O'NEAL:

Google came up with 5/10 accurate results on the first page. Bing came up with 3/10. A Google Image Search comes with 3/21 relevant pictures to Bing's 1/21. Bing's entire shtick is that it whittles away the random, producing only the relevant results... so far, it's lagging behind Google. Maybe I'll try with a less self-centered search next time lol.

Check out Bing-vs-Google.com for a live side-by-side comparison on any search keyword.

This is all a part of my quest to become an early (free, because I can't afford to buy every debuting gadget) technology adapter - or at least not a late one. I've been using Google Chrome instead of Mozilla Firefox - and it's pretty awesome, though for certain things, I have to switch back... examples: uploading pictures in Chrome is weird. The interface box looks primitive and sometimes freezes up. When uploading pictures on blogger, it's impossible to resize on Chrome. Also, the highlighting is bizarre. I like to highlight text when I read it, and Chrome has the tendency to highlight an entire line of text automatically rather than a few words.

Other than that, Chrome is awesome. You can barely tell you're using a browser. It's very minimal. It feels like you're just ON THE INTERNET.

Dîner en blanc 2009

picture from ParisDailyPhoto

I've wanted to visit France for 4 years (missed my senior year exchange trip in high school) and I may be going next year as a chaperon to my brother's high school trip because they want to get some French speakers (I took French for 12 years, but haven't had a lesson in 4)... but I won't count my eggs before they're hatched. Even if I do go with my brother, I'd still like to plan a separate trip alone and REALLY explore and absorb Paris.

One of the events I want to participate in most is Diner en Blanc. From Cnn's iReport.com:
10,000 Parisians participated Thursday evening in an annual summer ritual, the "Diner en Blanc" ("White Dinner"), where they take over a major landmark dressed completely in white.

Carefully orchestrated planning results in everyone arriving at a secret location (this year was the famous Place Concorde) at a specified time. They proceed to set up tables and chairs, light candles and pop champagne corks -- all within 10 minutes !! Onlookers and tourists are amazed by the spectacle.

Participants then enjoy a picnic dinner, light sparklers, and dance until 12:30 am. As quickly as it all started, everyone packs their belongings and trash. Nothing is left behind.

The event website is: www.whitedinner.fr
Sounds like an elaborate, extended flash mob, no? Or something a Parisan Improv Everywhere group would dream up.

Iranian Woman Voting

From Jezebel.com:

An Iranian woman shows the ink on her finger after voting at a polling station in Tehran on June 12, 2009. Hundreds of voters were standing outside one of the biggest polling stations in uptown Tehran, an indication of a high voter turnout in the early hours of the presidential election in Iran. I love your sweater!

See I Love Your ______ Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Hey Rihanna,

Nice Sweater. But where are your pants? I understand that sometimes a sweater is so awesome you feel it may compensate for a lack of pants - and I won't argue with you on that point.

My offer still stands about the sweater thing, though. Any time you need a one-of-a-kind, hand-knit sweater, let me know. I'll whip one up like.... yesterday. Or a scarf, a beanie, or whatever. (I'd offer to knit you some pants, but I can't imagine they'd be flattering - but who knows? You're a trendsetter!)

Just putting that out there. Again.

Then we can be besties.
=)

T-Pain & Taylor Swift Collabo???

I can't believe I'm typing this, but I like Taylor Swift's music (don't pretend you haven't found yourself *accidentally* singing Love Story) - but I can't imagine this netting any positive results.

Just as I wouldn't enjoy a peanut butter and nail polish sandwich - I probably wouldn't enjoy a T-Pain and Taylor Swift song... the two are fine separately, but that doesn't mean they complement one another...

But I could be wrong. About the song. Not the sandwich.

Favorite Song 4 now

Teyana Taylor Complicated:

Zack Morris on Jimmy Fallon!!!!

OMG!!!! I used to LOOOOVE Saved By The Bell! and of course Zack and Slater (Mario Lopez).

I only watched the first episode of Jimmy Fallon's new late show - but if these are the kind of rabbits he's pulling out of his hat, I might have to tune in more often.

BEHOLD GREATNESS:

Mr. Darcy.... swooooooon?

I love Pride and Prejudice as much as (if not more than) the next girl, but Mr. Darcy never did it for me. In the UK, Darcy apparently outranks Brad Pitt (who also does nothing for me) as the man with whom women would most like to spend a night.

Mark Malkoff!

I saw a story on CNN.com about a man named Mark Malkoff who has decided to live on an airplane for an entire month to combat his fear of flying... Weird, right? Well, that's only the beginning. Turns out, Mark is a filmmaker and comedian who's been doing things like this for years (trivia - he also works for the Colbert Report).

Last year he lived in an Ikea for a week:

The year before that, he visited and patronized all 171 of Manhattan's Starbucks locations.

This guy is nuts and pretty entertaining.

Dance, Puppets, DANCE!!!!

I would like to roll down that hill.

and also figure out the street name for whatever that first guy is on and WEAPONIZE IT!!! (KIDDING!!!)

Update: His name is Collin Wynter and he's from Canada.
